Combines new corn heads

I have been using a NH 996 since they came out- about 4 years. I like it. No problems. The plastic snouts and variable width stripper plates are really nice. last year I had sme down corn and a neighbor rented my head to finish up- he liked it also. The 996 is essentially the same as the newest NH and Case.

From what I was told by a guy that works for the local case dealership, the NH corn head and the Case use the same frame but have different parts. We have a 996 head that we have used for three seasons with no problems at all, but the new case heads have had a lot of trouble with shafts breaking and gearboxes going out. I thought they were the same heads just different color, but he claimed they are not.

After only one year with very heavy corn residue last fall my new 2208 chopped up the stalks almost as good as the old head. I was very satisfied with the new head. I think the longer dividers are better than the old for down corn.

Thanks Mike, Good to hear that they didn't make some kind of big leap backward. Occasionally something proven successful gets replaced by something less successful. long dividers are good for getting under the down corn but permitting stone to drop out before the rolls and chains too.

The new heads are junk in down corn. Gathering chains pop off and the corn can not get over the hump on the plastic snouts. They also do not do as good as job on the corn stalks as the old ih head

Hi Turbo, Your comment in regard to the down stalks getting over the hump parallel what I overheard before. The guy said that it was the same design as NH and it was wrong. Wonder if there's any benefits though like consistent feeding or less forward ear loss. Do they provide much choice of snapping roll speeds. I have to admit to running head fast to chew up stalks! Haven't been real thrilled with the cost of double 60 chain for input drive. The head I looked at didn't look like the sides could save flying ears but maybe wouldn't hang onto stalks and then drop them ears and all. What the heck could cause the chains to pop off. You'd think that any designer should know what works for tension and position of sprockets and strippers, whatever!
