I have read almost all the posts in the history and I will have to disagree. The catman ,abrasive as he may be, has very intelligent and thought out answers. I will have to agree that the whole old combine question was a bit corny. It was my first post.

706gas welcome, glad to have you. First machine ever operated was a Case A6, Wisconsin V4 engine, then up(IJ) to a Case 65 (2 rows of soybeans),pto behind a SMTA and a 706 gas. Next move was a big one, a 403 w_13' platform 4rwandn corn hd, then an 815-4rn hd 15' platform. Still feeling the need for more, a 'high stepper' 915-6rn hd and 20' Hc flex cutter bar. Drove it home from E-Moline (350+ miles, only 1 season and then came the 'lo-pro' 915 w_8r corn hd, got 4 good yrs, then to the 1480s and have been rolling '88s' since 94. Will be in a 05 2388 when harvest starts this fall. It has been a good ride and have no regrets, just wish I was still that young. (Don't we allIJ) Best of luck to you.

That should make you about 40 to 45 years old then, rightIJ I was the same age when my dad bought a 503 hydro. It had a cab, but no air cond. I dont ever remember having any trouble with the hydrostatic system either. I think they were a great combine. Only thing we had problems with was the straw chopper belt burning up all the time. There was'nt enough room behind the walkers with the round back styling to let the straw fall down to the chopper evenly.

welcome 706gas as a young potential farmer the first machine I remember dad having was a 123IH all they would let me do was sit on the ladder next as I remember was a 141IH then came the 151IH rice special being from the rice capital of the world at that time, my dad and a friend drove the 123 over to China Texas one year to custom harvest it was his first taste of gumbo land they eventually flooded it so the mud wouldn't stick to the tires gumbo farmers know what I'm talking about. next was the variable speed 403 then a few years later came the 403 hydro no cab but it wasn't long before dad put one on then came an 815 with large gas engine euuh! she liked the gas good machine kept her one year sold her for $200.00 more than he paid then came the 915 diesel came with the 24inch auger in the table odd for the times, myself I started with a used 915low profil then dad an I have owned 1680, 1688, an now 2188 He's 75 an the combine operator I'm 47 an trying to stay saneIJIJIJIJIJIJIJIJPS I'm almost positive about the 141IH model but I didn't see it on the IH combine history website these were all rice machines!!!!!!!!!!!

I still have my Dad's 101 combine sitting in the back of our machine shed (it has always been shedded). It last cut wheat about 1978, but could be field ready with about 8hrs prep. I offered to donate it to a local museum a couple of years back, but they didn't have room for it (so they said).

I'm new to this too. I live in western Kansas and my uncles farm and they have a 1997 Gleaner R72 and a 1993 R62. I run the R62 mainly, but i'm actually a Case IH fan. We have older J.I. Case tractors, 830,930,1070,2290,1370,2590, and a New Holland Versatile 9482 4WD. I know some guys in the county next to us, Jerry and Duane Keller, they farm over there and then do custom farming on some pivots by Garden City and they do custom cutting. The used to run Gleaners till they used the N7's which was prolly one of Gleaners worst ever then they switched to CIH. They now have I think 4 2388's and this past summer they were using an AFX8010 for wheat with a 39' flex draper. Word has it that Case sent them out to farmers and let them use them to test them and to fix all the gremlins in them. I think that the AFX8010 is an awesome combine and I was wondering what would be a better buy for a farmer, a smaller, cheaper 2388 or a big expensive 8010.
