RJT,I bought a used 98 830 hugger head and had the same problems with the splined connectors until I went to Caterpillar and got a handfull of 12mm bolts and nuts and a bottle of high strength loctite, I tightened them down to 300 ft lbs and I had no more trouble.I think it is a design flaw that needs to be corrected!!!

300 or 30 ft lbsIJ What grade bolts did you buyIJ Grade of metric fasteners is marked on the head with a typical grade being 8.8. Thanks.

Tom the bolts that come with the head are 10.9 metric. The ones I got at Standard nut and bolt in Hector were 10.9. I to wonder what Cat has. I know it helps to get fine thread, easier to tighten, but I didn't put locktite on, maybe I should.

Our 10 year old 830 hugger has just started having this problem on one row. We were trying to think of something to install on hex shaft to keep coupler from sliding over. Something like a locking collar. I do not think it would take much to keep it from sliding over. However, if those bolts come loose maybe it is better the coupler slides rather than round the splinesIJ

You might have to build your own if you want fewer than 12 rows. As far as I know company only build 12x22. I have a 2 year old 12x22 with about 200 hours on it that I would sell for $29900. You can call me at 320-523-1099 or e-mail rterstee@tds.net Ron

Just getting back to the forum, no dew on the last two nights. That row is opposite from where we had problems. Ours were in the first two rows on each side, where the clutches face each other. On the 20" there is only a fingers width between the two clutches. Always lined up perfect but enough flex in the units apparently would slowly loosen those cluches no matter how tight you had them or how often you tightened them. Finally after about 4 clutches and shafts ($$$) we switched rows around so all clutches faced the center. The center two clutchs are close but driven by separate shafts so not tied directly together. By having 20" of shaft to take the little bit of flex instead of half inch we eliminated the problem. Had to get longer hex drive shafts and cut them off just right. Has worked great all season. Thought maybe yours were also too close in the same area being a 22". You are right though, once they loosen once and wear a little on those splines you can't keep them tight. We have welded them and a couple of years ago finished corn with eleven rows (last 50 acres) because one of the outside rows striped clear out. Sorry I couldn't help but maybe it will help somebody.

Ron at Standard has everything including hand tools at favorable prices. We have him ship stuff to us when we dont have time to drive there. Did someone in your neck of the woods lose a combine or cornfield on Monday afternoonIJ The mike on my tractor radio wasnt properly grounded so I could hear other conversations including a guy who said, A Deere combine is in the field and it is on fire. I dont know if it was the combine or the field. I tried responding but couldnt make contact with him.
