Usually replace the knives when the front 2" of tungsten hardness coating is gone. Unless the harvest conditions are poor then will change sooner. The corn head will chop stalks and pick better the flatter the stalk rolls run (more parallel to the ground). Just make sure the snouts are adjusted to keep the frame and gear casings out of trouble.

Was talking to a Deere owner who put a "wedge Kit" on his corn head. This changed the angle the head mounts to the feeder house. He said it made a huge difference on the performance of his knife rolls. Does CIH have something like this or do they already run "flat" enough IJIJIJ It seems Deeres run at more of an angle than CIH to begin with. Thanks for ANY input!!!

How many of you have seen the BIG pile of corn stalks that build up on JD headsIJ. Is their rolls less agressive to pull stalks to the groundIJ J.

I'm not totally certain of this but I think you can take the knife off of one side and put it on the otherside and have the sharp edge on the bottom end. It would be like flipping the knife over!

All axial flow combines have the ability to adjust the feeder face angle 1400 series to the 8010. Deere just came out with it on the 60 series, that's why they need to use wedge kits on previous models to adjust feeder face angle.

I hear that pile of trash is caused by having flat profile stripper plates.

Minnesotaboy, You are correct on the flipping of the knives. The only thing is when the knife does wear down some on the bottom the stalks will stick in between the plates on the top. Question for you. Are you close to Montivedeo, MN and if so how much did the 1660 combine sell for on WednesdayIJ Thanks. Jack

Jack, I never thought about the stalks getting caught on the top end. I live about 100 mile south of Montivedo, so no I didn't hear what the combine brought.
