You are lucky to find a low hour l-3. We ran 84 l-3 4000hrs only bearings lost were main shaft and right cyl. drive. Iam not familar with jd7721. GOOD lUCK!

I run an M3 which is the same machine only narrower and has a smaller engine. There are hundreds of things to look at when starting with a used machine. The first thing is to check your feeder beater (rotating drum in front of cyl.) The fingers should be straight and complete. You should check the timing and slip clutch specs toward manual. The cyl. need to be level with the concave and the bars need a sharp leading edge. I would reset the concave clearance gauges on each side. The bolts that adjust the clearance often need attention to the threads so to speed adjustment in the field.

we own an 84 l-3 and you should pay special attention to the bearings in the variable speed pulley. If the belt is too tight it will smoke the bearings quickly. We experienced this summer. If this happens adjusting the cylinder speed is next to impossible. And when you're in the middle of wheat, you don't want to spend time pulling the wheel off to get the pulley apart and change the bearings. Slip clutches are a great idea to check to like D. Smith said. We grenade a few a year, good idea to have a lot of spares! Check the unloading auger. The steel piece at the end of tube that holds auger has a brass bushing that might wear out, and if it does, the auger will make a ton of noise!
