Yes I have cut wheat with 973 head for many years here in SE Il. All you do is bolt the cutterbar up rigid for wheat.

I have been using a NH 973 flex-head for 10 years out west for wheat harvest. It has been an advantage most of the time. The pipe-plastic fingered reel helps with wheat that has lodged. The disadvantage is that it is hard to keep the wheat feeding evenly especially in thin short wheat. I now have a 973-30' that has a platform auger with retracting fingers the full length of the auger. This has pretty much corrected that problem. Many of the augers in the 30' headers cracked or broke and had to be replaced anyway. NH paid for replacing many of these. This is a common problem with all makes. As combines get more engine hp the combines can take more material in and when a wad ges under the auger in the middle it puts a tremendous strain on the auger.I have two JD pickup headers that we use on our TR's. I am looking for a 13 foot head to put a Rake-Up pickup on. I would be intrested in selling one of my JD's. We use these in the San luis valley to pickup malt barley. You didn't say what kind of a pickup you werelooking for on a 971 headIJ I assume you were thinking of a belt type.
