Big Al: I am pretty sure that your third gear problem is caused by dirt built up on your transmission shift rails. When you shift the lever in the cab, the "H" slot allows you to either select the upper or lower shift rail on the tranny. Check on the right side of the tranny where the cable linkage is and notice the 2 shift rails with the spring loaded mechanism. When you shift from 1 rail to the other, it must be able to lift a peg to lock into the upper rail. Dirt built up in this area will not allow you to get third gear even though in the cab you are in the third gear slot.
