Combines No More JD 3300

I haven't run a 4420 but I think it was wise getting a combine bigger than 3300. It took us a day and a half to cut 30 acres of 50 bu. Montana corn but we only plugged the radiator up once. The 3300 is pretty much good for only playing around with. We use ours to show off to our neighbors.

When i looked at the 4420 earlier i was not inpressed. The Cab was a mess. The only thing that i found reasonable after looking at it was the exterior paint job. BUT, while there i did something you will probably say is very stupid. I bought a late model 6600 with the big engine nad hydro. This was an amzing machine for its age. When idrove it i was impressed with the snappyness. The guy even had me cut a pass of beans with the head that came with it. It was at no lack of power when it came to some weeds. The 15 footer was in great shape as well. Total package with 15 foot flex:$3000 like i said call me stupid. But this combine should last me many years hopefully it will cover me through about 400 acres. So wish me luck off to find a good plow and disk to pull behind a 1486

After you read this, you won't be thinking you were stupid anymore. We paid $3300 for a 1972 3300 gasser and a 343 corn header. The corn header cost more than the combine. We located this combine in Iowa using the computer. The work of running a farm and ranch in Montana kept us from looking for a better deal. We don't even use this combine on our farm because it only has a corn header. I am sure we could have found a cheaper 3300. I don't think you did anything stupid. I think you got a pretty good deal on a good combine.

Stupid no. Brilliant, YES! That is exactly what I am shopping around for. At $3,000 you got a HECK of a deal! I got a bunch of hours on the neighbor's 4420 before he traded for a 6620 T2. The 4420 did a good job but this one was a hangar queen. In the 7 seasons he owned it, it went through an engine and two transmissions.

Saw a nice 3300 rotary screen sell in Indiana a few weeks ago.It had a nice grain and corn head.It brought $1500.00. A nice 4420 sold in western ohio last saturday with grain head for $9000. I've seen 3 6600's with rotary screens in demolishion derbys this summer.

Your neighbor must be right rough on equipment! I have a 1973 flat screen 4400 diesel, with 2800 hrs on it, and all we have ever had to do to it other than routine maintanence is replace the radiator, a couple of alternators, he A_C compressor, and most of the bearings bearings since it was new.

How do you keep the radiator from getting plugged before the days endIJ

A lot of guys I know talk about how bad the radiators on flat screen machines plug up, but honestly I have never had any trouble with the radiator plugging up on mine except once when the radiator core got a pin hole and started leaking, and the antifreeze started collecting dust. I was cutting wheat, and it was about 103 degrees outside, and I was running the A_C on max, and the temp guage would creep up, but never got into the red. I got a new core put in it, and have had no trouble since. I blew the radiator out last spring after wheat, and I just finished picking 200 acres of corn with it last week, and the radiator never plugged up once. After I finish beans, I will probably blow the radiator out, before I put the combine away for the winter. I think the flat screen gas combines were much worse about overheating because they run a lot hotter than the diesels. They were also famous for catching fire and burning up. Thats why so few of them are left.

we have a 4400 rotery screen we have had few problems with it. we had to put a new finel drive new concave new rasp bars and just this last week we broke the axel on the final drive that we got of a junked comebine when the oringal one locked up. it has been a good machine. it still has the oringal altnaror. we put them harden rasp bars in it. we r on or 3 set of drive belsts. we onely have 2500 hrs on it. the only complain about our 4400 is that the brakes aren't the best. Does anybody know how to make the brakes work better then they doIJ
