Combines Not enough power on 9760

The local salesman told me that the sts ran short on power if the choppers are fully engaged. He told me that what he saw in the feild was a 9760 with the knives half way out would out run a 9860 with the knives all the way in and chew up the straw better than the 9600. Just an idea.

I watched a Cat 460R (with 30' platform) out run a 9760 STS (with 36' draper) in 50 bu_ac wheat and both were running their choppers. The Cat was spreading a full 30' pattern and the 9760 was doing about 25-26'. The funny thing is, the 460R has 50 less horsepower than the 9760 and was running a good 1mph faster [460R] and it isn't because of the header width to power ratio either, they are the same! The 460R is a much more efficient operator, optimizing power more efficiently than the STS (check fuel economy). I have never understood why one would compromise a combine feature's performance just to gain more overall combine performance when you had to pay to have that feature to start with. If a manufacurer or dealer told me to only run my chopper half way, why couldn't I have half my money back for itIJ If built right to begin with, one wouldn't have to make such a suggestion!

I had to remove the Intensive Seperation System from my 1981 Claas 96 AFTER I purchased the combine, and my dealer (or Claas corporate, for that matter) never offered me any form or refund or compensation for it. In fact, the dealer even refused to remove the beater for no charge; - poor service. I hope CAT is operating thier affairs differently; - I believe they are.

You might want to check your fuel filters. The chopper takes 50-70hp to run with knives in.
