In the old days we used single axel trucks placed in spots around the field. You stopped to unload most of the time and had to dump at the truck even if you were half full. Now we use a grain cart pulled by a Massey 4880 and unload on the go.The problem is the grain cart is heaveyer than the tractor so you never go strait down hill. You always go around the hill and slowly angel down till you get to the bottom.Than we have semis at the road sometimes a mile away.We have had problems with braking the wheel off on the down hill side of the grain cart and some times they tip over big mess. The person driving the grain cart has to be on the ball all of the time. good luck

I know of tractors on grain carts that have Jake brakes on them too. Brakes on most 4x4 tractors are not much good on steep hills. Some guys mount chisel plow shanks on the back of the cart to act as brakes in a pinch. You also see 18 wheel grain trucks on top of some large hills too, which looks weird. Ya have to pick your route carefully and know how your going to get out. The joys of farming in the Palouse.

It seems like the cart would turn over easily. How far is the combine auger from the cart when you're dumpingIJ Its got to be pretty far apart. Thank you for replying. Its a question I have always wanted to ask. I have heard of the Knudson tractor before. Are there any of them still runningIJ It has a leveling system kinda like your combine rightIJ

Riceman, there were few Knudsons sold in the Palouse. Probably due to the cost and late of arrival in the area after other four wheel drives were well established. There is one sitting on the John Deere lot in Colfax, Washington and one last winter in Moscow Idaho at the CIH store. (I don't know if it was the same tractor or not. Remember seeing an old Steiger playing tag going from one dealer lot to another a couple years ago.) They were probably traded for a tracked JD and CIH. There was a grower that had two that were shown in a magazine article. Very rare. At the time of the Knudson, Steiger was the popular tractor in our area ( lots of Deere too in the whole area) along the WA_ ID border. lots of Versatile north of us and alot of crab steer Case in one area southwest of us.

I f its a steep hill it can be 10 feet or more from the unloading auger to the cart. And if you get the cart up hill evan a little with out shutting off the leveling you stick the auger in the cart.I have not done this but my nephew did it on an older machine. My brother-in-law had a Knudson it got around the hills allright but he had alot of trouble with it.I drove it for a day one time and it was hard to drive. It had a lever you would twist to turn the back wheels and the steering wheel ran the front wheels. The first corner I came to I almost put it in the creek. You didn't have to worry about going to sleep. have a good day

If your having problems with the cart "pushing" the tractor down the hills why not fit brakes to the cartIJ Or better still just reverse down the hill!!!!!
