Its the thing you put on the combine (In the front I might add ) when you go to shell corn. Gerhring Company makes it. JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!!!! but you asked the question and you know what a I tell my kids. Really its a corn head that shreds the stalks as you shell the corn. Don't get mad at me Silver Bullet, Illinois Gleaner

Geringhoff is a corn head that chops the stalks as you combine. We were impressed enough with ours that we took the dealership on this year. It allows you to follow the combine with a chisel plow, which is a real time saver for us. I will be posting some pictures of it in action this fall on our website to show the job that it does.

That's OK. I thought I was fairly up to date on most equipment but this one through me for a loop. I think I have seen something like it but I just didn't know it by its name.

Dibber, I always thought these things were good but how do they compare to a Hugger in price for an 8-30 and are they heavyIJ They should save at least one trip across the field should nt theyIJ Illinois Gleaner

I have used the Gehringhoff corn head for three years now - uses 3 rolls (a third roll is stacked discs that are very sharp) to cut rather than shred stalk - more horsepower efficient than shreding. They will pull some more than a regular head. My findings are that the Gleaner(newest versions) header drive and Cat's are the best to handle it. The New Holland is next best, and CIH and Deere last. The shame of it is for Deere people is that in Europe they sell a one speed header drive that is Great, but won't sell it here. Got to go now. If you have more questions about this header, glad to respond.

An 8 row 30 inch head weighs 5500lbs which is about 500lbs heavier than a hugger head, this head doesn't weigh much more than the standard heads. They do save a trip across the field and the nice part of this chopping system is you get all the stalks cut before you drive over them. I will have some pictures this fall of what the fields look like on our website so you can see how well they chop the stalks. When we are done picking we go right behind our combine with our 30' chisel plow instead of having to use our disk ripper that is only 18 feet wide, so you can see where there is a lot of time savings as well as feul savings. They are higher than a regular corn head but they are cheaper if you figure the ownership costs of a stalk chopper.

Shredding stalks as you combine is an interesting idea. I was just wondering how much more horsepower this eats upIJ

They use 5 horsepower per row. Not sure what a regular corn head uses for power.
