We did this to our 1680 and had no problems, we didn't have any galvanized color paint so we just used black paint.

Dupont makes a 2 part primer for galvanized parts called veriprime. It comes in 1 quart for each part. I don't think you will find anything in a rattle can. Paint will not stay on without special treatment.

Did my 1680 about 6 years back and it is about ready for another coat. Black looks better, like a 2388!!

I did it on my 1660. Didn't use any primer so i have to touch it up every year. looks a lot better and doesn't collect any more dust like most people said it would.
