Buddy, we have run plastic fingers for about 3 years now and for exactly the reason you stated above, they do no damage to the interior machine if one breaks and goes through...have seen rotors with holes punched in them by these fingers....not sure you get much more from the plastic because of flex,maybe on a smaller rock but if you hit one big enough to dent the auger it will clean the plastic ones right off too..sometimes a bunch of bean stems will break plastic fingers, especially if tough,that metal would handle or slip the auger...all in all you will replace as many or maybe slighly more plastic fingers as you do metal but again with plastic you aren't fixing the chopper etc..you can use the same guides but you will have to drill the hole larger..
