Combines Poor Straw Spreading on R 60

Rada; I have found a way to fix this spreading problem. Use the two paddle setup, and set one full advanced and one full retarded(30' header). When tightening the bolts close to the center shaft, you can hold the arm up or down to vary height of each arm as it comes around for fine tuning. Then on the lower part of the chute above the spreader, put an inner sheet (about 18") that can be adjusted to place the flow somewhat foreward of it's factory flow. You can put too much to the left side of the machine with this setup. I've told Gleaner to add this to the machines, but I don't know if the new ones are any different. I have essentially this change on my R72 and I know it works. Differing side winds will affect spread of course, but in no wind conditions, I can have perfect 30' spread.

Do you have rubber or plastic paddle extentionsIJ If so, try taking them off, that has worked for us on our R5 with the same spreader setup. Just another idea for you to ponder.

Check to see spreaders are turning the right direction. The left two paddle spreader should be turning clockwise as viewed from the top. The four paddle should be turning counter clockwise as viewed from the top. The straw should be falling into the channel of the paddle and then slipping by the rubber paddle. I have seen both the spreader turning backwards and paddles flipped over and they affect spreading alot. I have seen paddles flipped over from factory so paint may still be on where the straw should be falling. Dual spreaders on the 62 and 72s have a little more ledge to the channels for the left two paddle spreader which should increase spread to the left. Unsure if RamRod has that but you may want to look into that also.

Dan, I think that Rada has a one spinner spreader as I read his post. I did have an R60 that had the two spinner(dual) spreader, but didn't have better results with that than the mods to my current machine I mentioned in other post. Simpler is better if results are equal or better. I checked with dealer and new machines can be had with hydraulic drive - would hopefully have an easy on the go dial for speed set for varying conditions like wind, tough to dry straw, etc. Costs nearly $2000 US as an option.

Dan, We do have dual spreaders on our R-60. They are both turning the correct direction as we have already changed that. When we first bought the combine four years ago, the spinners were both turning the same direction. We found out later that the first owner only combined corn so spreading wasn't a problem. I will look at the paddles to see if they are installed correctly. It seems strange, but after we installed a straw chopper, we have more problems with spreading than we did before the chopper. Thanks for your help.

We had the same problem with our 1987 R60 and a 20ft head. We took off as many paddle extensions as it took to make the straw spred evenly across the 20ft. Start with two and the go to four off if that is what it takes. This worked well for us in wet heavy bean straw but as the straw gets drier you will have to put the extensions back on because it will then not throw the straw far enough. We have a chopper and hyperized machine so I would think that the would act the same.
