are you talking about the shaft and pulley having play . if that is the case the bearings are loose in the housing, quite rare. is the pulley loose on the shaft, then nut is not tight on the bottom pulley shaft. but if it is the two big bearings. they are held tight in the variable speed housing by the tightness of the rotor belt. if someone stepped on the rotor belt you would be able to move housing. it would seem the bearings would be out. some of these bearings lost there zerks and never got greased. new improved bearing now. hope this helps.

if you are talking about the pto gearbox the pulley could be loose or it needs bearings. usually if bearings are loose seal would be leaking. bearings on these are a lot harder to set

Thanks for the reply. After posting my question I went back and removed the square inspection plate on the PTO housing I then applied pressure to the pulley of the shaft and noticed the tapered bearing inside of the housing moving approx. 1_16 of an inch do you think this is acceptable. Thanks Kevin

no not acceptable. is there a nut inside the housing that holds the tapered gear on. if there is then the nut backed off of holding the right rolling torque of the bearings. if the seal is not leaking you maybe able to save it. tighten up to no end play . should be able to turn with little effort though. hard to consider with hydro and engine attached.
