Combines Powershift verses Quad Range tranny for grain cartIJ

I drove graincart on custom harvesting run for a summer, had an 8430 4wd jd with quad, and 1000 bu killbros cart, aside from other problems, the transmission got in the way when comming up to the combine, you would be going fast and need to slow down, but you have to stop in a quad, the combine driver starts unloading as soon as you are under, you stop, he dumps on your roof. sounds silly but happens a lot, especially with young combine drivers. I recommend a powershift, easier to drive, more productive, less likely that a wild cart driver will wreck it.

I have a 4630 quad, I have no experience with 4630 powershift. I would not like my 4630 quad on grain cart. You need to stop to shift, and the 4630 is a dog under 1500 rpm. If it were me, I would try get the powershift so you can just keep the rpm's up and powershift.

Powershift, not even a contest. We are still using an old 4850 MWFD powershift with over 8500 hours to pull an 840 Kinze. Does a great job and the powershift is great for topping off trucks, changing pace of combine in tough conditions etc.

If it was me driving the cart I would want a powershift. A JD 4630 would only have the 8 speed powershift though, I dont know much about them. I think you would like the 15 speed powershift a lot better. The first 15 speed powershifts were put in the 50 series.

I would definately suggest the powershift because you have a very quick and smooth shift as well as a large variety of speeds unloading on the go with terraces and such.

No contest, go with the powershift. We ran a 4640 with the 8 speed powershift on a cart for a while, but if you use it much on a graincart, a 50 series with the 15 is preferable...smaller speed changes between gears, especially in the mud while you are bogging down you can just drop a gear and maintain engine rpm. just my .02 brad

Go with the power shift. I bought one last spring and it works great on cart. Driver doesn't have to clutch, just bump it up or down a gear to stay with combine. And yes it is a dog under 1400 rpm's, but I plan on putting in a different cam for more low end torque. My 4320 with special grind cam uses 1_2 the fuel and has more h.p. That will be my winter project this year.

we use a 8640 quad on a KB 800 bushel. I would rather have a powershift because one sould stop before shifting range. if you have to go very far you need to shift ranges and in my oppinion it is too much weight tring to take off again

We run our 4850 MFWD powershift also, it works great, we used a 4640 Quad one time but it was to light on the front end and was a major pain to shift and get the right speed with, also unloading was a mess with it.

Absolutely a powershift. We run to 4630's with grain carts, one with powershift and one with a quadrange and the turnaround times with the powershift are much better. The quadrange can't get itself rolling from a stop in a gear that gives it any speed.
