Yes. They do work. I run a '96 2188 AFS machine. We yield map, do site specific soil testing, and are hoping to find a site specific applicator in our area. One of the things that was very evident from last year was the need for tile drainage in several locations. My combine unit (approx. $6-8000US now) paid for itself in the second year as we did some side by side corn variety tests. The number I liked turned out to be the poorest one in the bunch. We don't plant that one anymore. We also did some side by side tillage comparisons. For that year, moldboard plowing gave a 20% or 30 bu increase in yield. We've done some liming by the soil tests. Since no GPS machines here, I flagged the field by the soil map. Some of it didn't need lime, the rest did. I feel there are multitudes of benefits from this system. I've never run anyone elses to know what they're like.

go to agcocorp.com web site and click on global markets. then there is a fieldstar web site to look at-demonstrate etc. for more information. this area still just at the tip of the iceberg but alot of interest. agco now has units on sprayers.and planters also

In a nutshell - yes it does work. How well and how profitable depends on how much time and effort you are willing to invest in utilizing the systems capabilities. I have used the Micro Trak system, helped to set up and train operators on the AFS system and the GreenStar system. I like GreenStar the best.
