Combines Prepping 7720 for wheat

Just follow the books settings pretty close and then do fine tuning after that. You should be ok then. All of the machines here in Kansas that harvest wheat they consider a "corn combine". To my knowledge all internal parts will work as is. Do not try to run that deere in wheat though like you did a massey by watching the rear beater rpm. I use the harvestrak on the 9600 now but when I ran my 6620 I would go by the cylinder rpms and the sound of the engine next to me while continually checking the quality of the wheat coming into the bin and occassionally climbing out and seeing how much bird seed I was passing through. Kick open that door down by your bottom left foot and then pull open the door on the front of the return and watch that for awhile as well and it will give you an idea. To much return might be driving to fast or wind to slow or sieves open to far.............You know how to cut wheat so you know how to make the adjustments. Just take your time and first time out go with what the book says. You'll do fine.......your going to miss that hydro lever in your right hand with the arm rest but I found that I could rest my right elbow on the armrest while running the hydro and header height control and fatigue wasn't to bad at all. The only other thing that I would add is to check the grate under the beater to make sure it is in the correct position for wheat. It has two places-I think it is up for small grains and down for corn and beans. We run pretty close to book settings and just keep an eye on chaffer loss and get along great. You probably will not get the same sample. The Massey with the triple sieve can't be beat. You will have better power and other than the placement of the controls, the cab is more quiet and comfortable. We never could get as good of a sample out of buddys 8820 that my 860 would give. Be patient and good luck.

I traded a 550 for a 7720corn and bean machine four years ago. I replace the beater speed pulley so that the beater runs 1.5 times faster than the cylinder. That is recommended for wheat and small grains. I also replaced the lower sieve with the small tooth sieve instead of the large tooth in the corn grain machine set up. obvioulsy no comparison in terms of capacity. Good luck

I thought that they made two concaves one for wheat and one for corn, also the front drum height position in the feederhouse will have to be changed to the lower position. It would be in the upper for cobbs.I dont mean to bash on the old masseys but i never hated life so much as when I ran as 860 for about 3 seasons. Biggest grain loosin,slow runnin,mud stuckin,chain breakin,noisy,poorly engineered,canadian,piece of crap ever produced in combine history. Had a good 540 perkins though!
