Combines Preventing Grain Harvest Contamination of Special Grain

This problem is something that combine makers overlook. It doesn't matter what brand, they all have there problem areas to clean. It would be interesting to see what variation there is between machines. The problem we face on our farm is more of changing between crop types rather than seperating varieties within crops although this is still a problem. Your idea of different colored corn would most likely work. Unless you have two crops that are similar physically but a different color. Here we could use say: Field peas and lupins, which are a similar shape and size but one is green_brown and the other white.

I agree w_ NDGriz on time to clean out machine. We raise registered_certified seed (no foundattion) and spend approx. 1 hour to clean between wheat varieties. For practical purposes the dilution factor after vaccuming and then flushing w_ +- 50 bushels is so great that any seed contamination is inconsequential for our purposes. However, we can find wheat in the machine after running 100,000 bu. of milo through it. Murphy's law would likely take effect if we were worried about some GMO-tester finding the one kernal grain, no matter how much flushing was done. I wish the engineers would keep this in mind; e.g. easy-to-drop bottoms of return and clean grain augers, etc. lack of turret auger was one factor in choosing our TR 98.
