Combines Progress of Wheat Harvest

I saw some wheat cut just south of Kansas City last Thursday, 6 days ago. I would suspect someone in cutting in Southern Nebraska by now, unless the rain is stopping them.

I am 18 miles south of the Nebraska Border in Kansas and there is no cutting going on yet. There is still green in the fields and most are in need of spray for weeds. It is drizzling to light rain tonite and after that the weatherman says sunshine till monday so we might see some action this weekend in a few fields but not alot. Near as I've heard the cutting hasn't even hit Hays ks. yet and that's a good 78 to 80 miles south of Ne.'s border.

I saw some storms go through on the radar, but I didn't realize the rain was that widespread. Most of the wheat is cut down by Ark City, but we missed most of the rain in the last few storms. We started on the 9th and things were rolling pretty good by the 11th. I saw that field up by KC along I-35, but I can't remember exactly where. It might have been further south than I thought. I remember the straw was good and yellow, so I figured the yield might be pretty decent.

I've quit judging that wheat by the straw. I've seen years we had 35 bushel wheat with 80 bushel straw and vice versa. I am going to dare to say that I think the wheat here this year is going to be pretty good but time will tell when the combines start rolling. looking and guessing is darn deceiving I've learned

I agree that every year is different. However, this year that bright yellow staw really yeilded down where we were cutting. The weather was dry enough this spring that we didn't get the fungus and crap that you normally get when the straw is too thick.
