Pulling wires from concaves is beneficial in corn. If you intend to thresh tough soybeans you will need to add cover plates. I suggest a set of 3. For more information on cover plates, click on the link below.
I run with the same wires out that you have removed and have cover plates over the front one and a half concaves. Had less than 1% FM on every load of beans taken to the elevator this year.
I have heard over and over that it makes a big difference. Actually a lot of guys do this to the last two concaves. Instead of pulling and replacing wires, you can often get one or two wide wire concaves from salvage yards, and then all you do is switch concaves.
Don, I have every other wire pulled on all my concaves. I harvest corn beans and Milo and I wouldn't have it any other way for all three of those crops. K.A.
We leave all the wires in for soybeans and then when we switch to corn we pull every other one on just the first to concaves. I'm sure that there are others that would disagree but we just didn't like the sample we got in soybeans with every other wire pulled so we put them back in. But for corn you almost have to pull them cause there is to narrow of gap for corn to fall through, also the shucks would always plug up in between the wires for us if it was a little wet. I have no experience with wide wire concaves but like the other post said you could buy a set of them and just switch concaves. hope this helps. Brad NC. IN.
