Instead of rigid pvc piping try using flexible 3" suction hose held down with conduit clamps behind the knife guards. This will greatly improve feeding up short beans and does wonders in preventing stone damage as well.

Hello Plowboy. I just finished putting 1.5" pipe on our 1020. I bought some pipe hold down clips from Integrated Ag (a Case IH dealer from New Hampton) they fit a 1.5" pipe. looks pretty slick, can't wait to try it out.

Will a PVC pipe of 3-4 inch dia. able to work as a rock guard if it was cut in half and secured behind the guardsIJ Rumor around here is that it is being done but I haven't gotten names yet. Securing it will be a trick but it would be cheap and should allow access to the sections for repair.

No need to cut it in half, and securing it is easy as well. Just use appropriate sized conduit clamps and bolt on behind the knife where your knife guards bolt on. The entire mod will take no more then 20 minutes and perhaps $50. We installed a 3inch suction hose which flexes with the knife.last year was the first year with NO stone damage as the hose prevents stones from entering the header all together. Short beans fed much better as well. I believe if you go over to the Gleaner site, click on tips and Gleaner mods they have more info .

Any PVC pipe will do; although I prefer 1-1_2" schedule 80 for its toughness. It would take much heavier pipe to hinder the floating action.
