veins are thicker in the AFX as well as heavier bolts I replaced the cone when I installed my AFX

You would definitely need the vanes to keep the material flowing rearward. Without these, the material will tend to just go around and around, since centrifigal force is trying to throw is outward to the large diameter, ie forward. I'm pretty sure the new AFX 8010 even has these vanes welded in place. Hmm, that might create some future service replacement challengesIJIJ

How does the transition cone wear differently with the AFX IJIJ The old elephant ears style would wear at the lower corners next to the seams and along the edge of the vanes. I wish the vanes were made out of square 15_16 key stock, just my two cents worth.

yes, veins are thicker and use more holes for mounting. They are a little longer, extending into the cage. They use some of the holes where the cone would bolt to the cage. Old veins would stop appox. 6" before cage. Hope this helps
