George, We have two of the adjustable airfoil chaffers. One is a loewen (Blue handles with adjustment notches) and the other is the factory version (number scale and wingnut to lock the handles). I can't recall exactly where we set either of them for wheat, but I do know we set them evenly from front to rear using the fan deflectors. If you are running without the deflector, I would pinch down on the front section a lot, maybe even close it. I'm going to guess setting the handle about half way between open and closed is pretty close for wheat. For soybeans, if the beans are full size, you will probably need to be a little further open, maybe three quarters of the way to full openIJ We do not raise corn, but I would be concerned that even with these chaffers wide open you will lose some capacity. However, the 2188 came from corn country with this chaffer and the previous owner didn't say anything bad about the chaffer, so maybe they work fineIJ Also, I rarely measure the opening, I just look at the monitor and the sample and adjust from there. If your fan is set high enough, I don't think the chaffer setting is too critical. We ran a fixed airfoil chaffer for many years and it's openings were pretty huge. I always wanted to put it back in one of the machines now that we have the fan deflectors, but just haven't taken the time to do it. I would guess it might work pretty decentIJ In general, I always seem to have the lower sieve set pretty tight. We have the return monitors, and usually set the lower sieve as tight as possible without running excessive returns. With a finger sieve, that can be nearly closed in wheat. In beans, much more open.
