My comment on farming like Deere, is a little vague......My apologies........ I was trying to make a point in that by farming with green equipment (or any specific colored equipment) will not make a guy rich or any better than his non-green neighbor......no matter what the "Percieved" trade in value is. We have gotten "hosed" on green, yellow, blue, and red....... A few months back I asked a fellow, Who claimed to have supperior trade in value with green, compared to any other color, for figures and how he comes up with this theoryIJ Not to my surprise------no response. Its one thing to get more when you trade, its another to pay more when you buy. What about the REAl cost of moneyIJ Just my thoughts.......Sorry about the confusion. Good luck!

I have read your posts here and on the SF site, with the obvious bias in all your posts, it's hard to take any of them seriously. I've been running combines for over 30 years, MF, JD, IH, and I can tell you that they all have their good and bad points.

How do you get "hosed"IJ Nobody makes you do a "bad" deal do theyIJ As for trade in value it depends a lot on the demographics of the market that you are in. i.e. which manufacturer has the majority of that particular market. Might be CASE might be JD somtimes NH. That used iron will move a lot better with the dealer support and market share dominance. ie it is worth more. The real cost of money is your cost of money not the dealers.

In reply to greenbine and catman (whoever you are today)........ The REAl cost of money is what your alternative for your $ is.....one example of our situation in 1998.....We were looking for a fwa over 200hp tractor. Our choice was a new mx, new 8970 fnh, and used 8200 with 700hrs.....our choice was the 8970, because it was 12,000 cheaper than red, and 14,000 cheaper than used green. If we would have went green.....no doubt we'd get a better % of that money back......but 14,000 could have been spent toward something to pull behind the tractor.....Ill take 14,000 now rather than in 10 years.....Basically your giving deere int. free money....This is my basic econ point of the great resale myth created and perfectly managed by Deere and Co. I will 100% agree with the greenbine in that dealer service will and should play a large part in choice of purchase.....In our area Ill take Cat over anything, untill I see a fleet of service trucks at local red and green dealers. In 20 years half the red and green dealers will have closed shop, and will have mobile mechanics living in strategical locations. Good luck fellas. Ps. catman did you sell your 480r yetIJ or is it still parked underneath the couchIJ

My theory is that you aren't a good farmer unless your neighbor's think your crazy of course there is a fine line between your neighbor's thinking your crazy and your banker thinking it which you don't want. I figure I'll start worrying about what our neighbor's think when they start paying my bills but until then I'll continue to do what works best for us.

You sir, are an idiot. Now I feel better. Are you talking about resale of 2 cyl today vs a comparable red in the collectors marketIJ What the hell does that have to do with anythingIJ

I never said otherwise. I try to know the good and bad points of the machinery I choose to use. However, in these forums it's generally not to anybodies advantage to go through point by point, good and bad, for brevities sake. I'll give you the positives I know, you can happily know the positives and negatives of whatever brand you choose to own and run. If you don't think my opinion is worth reading, then I suggest you should stop reading it. Chads

NewGuy: Just remember that your are dealing with your cost of the money on that day when you are making the decision. We can go on and on about resale value but to get serious think about the present a future value of the money that you spend....makes a big diffrence and I am not being biased about what color as you agreed with my post about resale value and the demographic area.....what area are you in that CAT is that dominantIJ In Western Kansas they are very week much to do with the lack of a real dealer network...all Green and Red out here for the most part.

Farm in W.C. Mn.....Zeigler is 55 miles from us... They have smaller market share, but in my very uscientific opinion, are increasing every year (from what I see, and told) Am unclear about your statement "Think about the present a future value of the money that you spend" Still not sure if you guy's understand the terminology of "REAl" cost of money.

Just compare a 5488 IH or a 2294 Case to a 4640 JD. No comparison at all. The JD is as much as $16000 "Canadian" higher, (same hrs, same condition). Can get as much for a 30 or 40 series JD as you could ten years ago. That's a very good investment.
