Combines R 65 collecting trash under rear of chaffer

We have the same problem on our R-62, especially on windy days. We didn't really come up with a good solution, but wondered if a lot of the problem might be trash coming in from the side rather than the bottom. I don't remember the layout of an R-65 exactly except that there seemed to be a quite a bit of open space for trash to enter.

On our R65 combine last year, we had the same problem. We took out the last row of fingers on the chaffer. It doesn't hurt anything to do this, but we were still plugging on good windy days. So I went and installed small wire mesh to cover up the 4-6" opening right over the top of the upright screen. I found out that the leaves were just getting in between the feederhouse and the screen. You'll see where once you look - which I think you already know where I'm talking about. Good luck! The new R65 is a joy to run!!

On our 65's I installed wire mesh on every opening possible. On windy days the leaves would suck up on everything cutting my airflow causing my seives to overload. Had to shut off machine and let leaves fall off to get capacity back. Need another fix.

Yes, I did cover that area with mesh screen like you did, but found that I had to stop every couple of rounds and clean everything off because I wasn't getting enough air. Just trying to decide if the slat removal is the thing to do or if I should close the whole bottom up with half inch round hole screen like the R62. My theory is that If the bottom was enclosed the cornstalks rubbing against it keeps it clean as you go. I' already looked into cost of the R62 screen which I think I can retro fit to work. It's $389, Hope to find one at a salvage yard for less, but Worthington and Meyers don't have any. Thanks for the help guys. It's good to know I'm not the only one haveing this problem like dealer and company rep say's.

You're on the right track by using the same mesh screen and enclosing it like the R62s. The front vertical face of the screen needs to be go higher. Taking out the last row of louvers on the chaffer may help somewhat, but it doesn't solve the underlying cause of the problem, which is the stalks getting inside in the first place. You're not the only one experiencing this; all the R65s and 75s in this area that I know of had the same issue, and most have fixed it themselves by doing the above.

I was unaware that they made this change to the 65_75s. Gleaner engineers continue to amaze (read baffle)me. An all 65_75s recall_retrofit campaign should be their response. We will see. If you do not improve the mouse trap - at least leave it alone! I have added some screening for corn leaf protection to the high side openings and have nearly eliminated problems with rear shoe leaf congestion. I do not have as much problems from the underside as I have tall Trelleborg front tires with the axle risers, which gets the whole machine up away from stuff that can suck up to bottom screen. Also, would you rather have a problem that can be tended to by shutting the machine off to clear quickly, or have to leave the cab and clean out. I dump corn on ends, and occasionally when dumping in empty wagon, I check back end, and do a walk around.
