Combines R 72 final drive question

You are reading the manual wrong. Make sure you read it closer if I remember right you get that preload at .15 so that you know what thickness of the shim that you need to remove to get to that .000 tolerance.

Thanks for the info. I saw the same .015"-.018" preload when we had our 1977 M2, I saw no mention of adding a .015"-.018" shim to achieve .000" insalled fit.

Could you tell if the bolts had stretched out or come loose on side that bearing was failingIJ They do ask for .015 to .018" preload. You add a shim thick enough so you have positive endplay i and then add that measurement to the .015 to .018 to get total thickness you need to remove. That puts a preload on bearings and housing but that is what they call for. It is common to most all tapered bearings on axles to preload a lot. Take care

Updating those bolts and washers is a good idea, because last year I had those bolts fail on my R72.luckly I was turning on the end.Heard a big bang and my duals where up against the ladder.Took it apart and there laid the washer and the head of the bolts in the housing under the combine. I was lucky it happen there and not on the road 5 minutes earlier. Illinois Gleaner

What is the set up on the final drive pinionIJ Mine failed and the new set up had what feels like .010 to .015 end play. I ran it but I think it should be at .000.

The service manual calls for that clearence to be .015-.018 not .000.My concern was we are finding the factory setting after 1000-2000 hours with no end play.I talked to servce at Hesston and they said to keep adding shims till you get .015. Also it seemings like I,m hearing more people having these bolts break. This kit includes a higher grade bolts,a thicker cap[washer] and you are not to use the tin locking retainer because it was causing the bolts to loosen up due to being so thin. Our bearing failure was caused due to the seal coming out and letting mud and water in.

You need the end play at first so you can figure out how many shims to take out to get the preload you need. If I remember right it should be a minus .015 when you are done. There should be no end play when installation is complete. It is kind of confusing just make sure you get it right so you don't wreck something more expensive.

Thank you very much for imfo.We now under stand what you are saying. The manual is saying what you all said.I guess we let it get by us and also was misled from one person from Hesston. Also my son watched our dealer set one up 150 hours ago at the .015-.018 end play.I need to bring this to their attention. We will be pulling four final drives off and re-shiming today. Finally got some sunshine today after 7 weeks of mostly clouds and 14 inchs rain. leaves us with lot of soybeans and some corn. Thanks again,Dennis
