I have had an M and an R50 in the past and the R50 was about twice the machine an M was, ESPECIAllY on hillsides. The rotaries are very good at saving grain over the conventionals. look at the accelerator roll to see if they have much wear. Also take a look at the helical bars. If they are wore the crop will not move across the seperator fast enough and cuts capacity. Check the fan on the Deutz engine. If it is wore much, replace it as a worn fan will not move enough air to cool it and keep the engine clean. look for ANY oil leaks on the motor. Oil leaks on an air cooled engine are not acceptable. The Deutz is a good engine as long as it is kept cleaned. If maintenace has been good on the combine, 1500 seperator hrs. are not a concern yet. Some of the tin work and floors under the conveyor chains will need replaced at maybe 2,000 hrs depending on the crops harvested and bushels produced. With a 438 cornhead you will run clear up in 2nd, (5.7 mph) with no problem in close to 200 bushel corn. I ran my R50 with an 830 head and picked corn at 5-5.5 mph in 100 bushel corn.

I had an F2 and upgraded to an R40 with 1100 engine hours. The side hill capacity is good. On side hills with the F2 I had to slow to a crawl in good corn or it would go out he back. I have replaced both feeder chains. This was mostly because the guide on one of the drums went by-by and it rip up the chain. I have also replace the auger flighting in the grain bin. Replaced all the roller chains but none of the belts yet. I pulled the rotor this winter and there was a distinct wear pattern on the rasp bars near the left side of feeder opening. I replaced rotor with a Sunny Brook rotor. I have done a majority of the upgrade suggested and the machine runs great. I have a 4 row hugger and it will do 5.5 mph plus in 150 bu. corn. I could probably go faster but after the F2 the speed scrares me. I have a 16' head and it handles it with no problem. I have turned up the horse power. It had enough but I just wanted more. I have not had a problem with grain quaility. At least I have not been docked at the elevator for quaility problems.
