spend the money and buy the 42. After 1989 1_2, and the 1_2 matters they changed the processor in the r40's to the current style. also they put the hydaulics on the combine so you do not have to run the auxillary pump on your grain head. a 89 and prior r40 nice nice machine, $20K tops. Also to replace a deutz angine 50k from your local agco dealer. the 42 nice cab, good good 4 or 6 row machine, 20 ft header, 20 minutes from corn to beans. same machine basically as the 52, less hp and graintank but if it is out of warranty, have cummins come out and bump the engine. The 505 is the same as in the r62 running 260 hp
