I'm looking at a new R42 and was wondering why a R52 costs so much more and if its worth itIJ Iknow it has more hp. and bin ext. but thats about the only diff.I'm a jd owner now so i'm alittle stupid on this.

As my name indicates, I'm a little new at Gleaner combine ownership, so I don't profess to hold a degree in Gleanerology like Tbran or Tom langan. My understanding is that the R52 has more horsepower, bin extensions, a heavier planetary drive system, and a chromed concave cage, all of which the R42 DOESN'T have. I opted for the R42 because I felt that it best suited my needs. The chromed cage is nice if you're combining a lot of beans; - it wears better I'm told. And the extra horsepower and heavier drive train is nice in muddy or tough conditions, which I seldom experience. Bin extensions are nice..., what more can I say. I tried both machines and chose the R42. One thing I do know is that the R42 WIll NOT keep up to a Deere 9400_9410 in wheat; - corn and beans maybe, but not in any crop with heavy straw!

New2Gleaner, I saw you had some upgrades installed this winter. Did you have feeder shocks in place for last harvestIJ How many reverse bars were installedIJ Did you have any extra helicals added or what did you have done this winterIJ Just wondering so I can judge how hard your 42 may have been pulling last fall. Thanks

Hi Dan, I only took possession of my R42 in December; - it hasn't stirred a speck of dust yet. Feeder shocks in place, no reverse bars and extra helicals installed. I guess this is a good starting point! The R42 I demo'd was strictly stock, had reverser bars (the dealer calls them retarder bars) and seemed to be a little hard on the straw. I'm hoping this configuration will work better; - I think it will based on what I've read on this forum.

I just need to clarify that MY degree is not in Gleanerology, but rather in B.S.ology, which covers just about every topic I participate in! As for the "retarder" bars mentioned below, it is the belief of most of us here on G_T that the term was coined to represent the character who invented them. I think you will find that your machine will run much mo' betta than the demo that had them in. Shouldn't be too difficult to catch a 9400_10. Tom langan

You say you hold a degree in B.S.ologyIJ I didn't think you were that proficient at it! :) I hope you're right about the difference the upgrades will make. All I know is that the stock R42 was running a good .5 to 1 mph less pushing an 18' flex in heavy wheat straw, compared to the Deere. I must emphasize that this DID NOT deter me from buying the Gleaner, anyway! In corn, a STOCK (i.e. no mods) R42 had no problem keeping up to the Deere, and did a far better job in high moisture corn (26% + moisture).

I didn't graduate at the top of my class - those guys all went on to be regular posters over on the green site! ;) Hope nobody is too offended - just having some fun! Tom langan

Do you need one now or just "want" one. Alot of people get in trouble with those two. The chase goes like this.....have bigger_newer eguipment need more ground to pay for it.....have more ground , now I need bigger_newer eguipment to get it done!!!! Of course everybody is different.
