Combines R50 capacity compared to l2

A stock R50 will outharvest an l2_3 by a fair bit. Do some mods found here on this site and there will be no comparison. As for the 7720, the l's would beat them hands down. The M2_3 were more of a combine than the 7720's. Of course, the Deere guys will want to argue this!

If you have any sidehills you will wonder why you would ever use a l2 again. The more the side hill the more advantage to the R50, and it is way ahead to start with.

My brother in law had an l2 and an R50 at the same time. He seemed to think in wheat the l would outcut the R and in milo the R had more capacity. Any other thoughts on different grains between these twoIJ I'm pretty sure the R would be way better in beens, rightIJ I've also considered going from an l to an R50 or 52 but some guys tell me to go to the 60's or 62's if I want to go bigger. The only advantage to the smaller machine would be weight(flotation) and the price - I'm not sure if they're enough cheaper. I'd like to here some more on this subject from people that have run these different models. Also on the differences between year models on the R series (engines etc) and what to look for.

I upgraded from an l2 to an R60 for one reasonthe larger grain tank. We have 1_4 mile rounds and an l2 or R50 cant get back to the truck with a 6 row corn head. Many guys get by with a smaller machine and bin extensions but I didnt want to monkey around with bin extensions. Tom Russell

I updated from an '81 l2 to an '88 R50 in 1994. It took a while to convince me it was a good move. Soybeans with ragweed was a real challenge for the l2. Rearranging the rasp bars on the R50 made it a totally different machine and it now will easily run away from the l2. Except -- The l is a better machine in wheat. Without the return to cylinder package, the R50 does a very poor job of threshing hard red spring wheat in particular and is not as good as the l in winter wheat either. But it still has extra capacity. I have not seen the big increase in fuel consumption per acre in wheat compared to other crops that I used to see with the l. If you need to bale the straw, well, variety is important but spring wheat will disintegrate totally if you can get to a good threshing job.

l3 - just keep in mind that going from an l to a 60_62 is a quantum leap! If you need the extra bin capacity like Tom Russell stated, or if you have a lot of sidehills, the 60's would be the one to get. But if you're just looking for more capacity, the 52's will make you happy. With a properly set governor on the engine, and even a couple of the mods (NO reverse bars!),you may find yourself hard pressed to keep grain away from a 52 if you're used to the l. The 60_62 is better in sidehills due to the much wider shoe. As the guy who always runs the grain cart, sidehills are the only time I wished we had a 62! Take care-

On are farm we have ran all of these machines. An R50 will out perform the l2 by quite a bit in tough conditions In our area they realy shine in higher moisture corn and beans. In perfect conditions I don't remember that much diffrence.

langan, Have you run a 7720 or 7720 T2, an l, l2, M2 and M3 to compare all three's performanceIJ let's hear your story. By the way my 7700 smoked the F2's and l2's in our area doing fescue.

Have run an F3 vs 6620 (back in mid 80's)- Silver ran circles (grain and corn). Have heard of MANY instances where the F2_3 series have outharvested 6600_20's Also ran M3 vs 7720 - Gleaner wins in grain (capacity, sample, and loss)and a toss-up in corn so it stands to reason the l2_3 would eat a 7720 for lunch. I have run a 6620 personally, but not a 7720. Take care-

My experience with 7720 vs. l2 was a not even a race in wheat anyway. I ran my '83 7720 with my cousin in his '82 l2 65 bu_Ac wheat and he couldn't come close to keeping up. The 77 just blew him away.Both had minimal grain loss. He even admitted he thought the 77 had between 10 and 20% more capacity. I was pushing a 24' head and he a 22'. A lot of it could have been in setting. He may have been a little green in setting his combine. I had the dealer set mine the first day... I think i could have ran his l through the 77 and never heard a grunt.....
