Combines R60 Engine curtains

I had an R60 air cooled... I took out several shields around the engine compartment. I think it helped, but I still carried a broom and swept out compartment every morning. Air cooled used less fuel then cummins, but is always dirtier. Good luck

What curtains are you guys talking aboutIJ I dont know of any curtains on my R60 unless you are talking about the ones under the exhaust manifolds that snap in on the bottom and are hinged at the top.

Yeah Tom thats the ones but mine are not hinged,they are bolted straight on and are a pain in the you know what when you need under them. I think they are there to keep dust out from the motor.

I took the one off the top of the motor near the drive end because it was breaking a chunk out of the oil cooler. We have used it one year and it worked really good.

Those panels on top of the engine are there to direct cooling air down around the cylinders. If you remove them, you are reducing engine cooling and could end up damaging your engine.

I just took the one off at the end of the motor where the air comes out of the cooler.

I have posted many times on this board that my engine does not require a daily cleaning and that I clean only once a year with compressed air when I am ready to put the combine in storage. Maybe the reason I dont have to clean more often is because all shields and covers are in place. What do you thinkIJ Air and water cooling share many similarities including volume of cooling air or water is directly proportional to the level of cooling. Reduce cooling air or water and you reduce cooling. Removing one cover on your Deutz cooling plenum would be like cutting a hole in your truck radiator to let coolant circulate easier. You wouldnt do it to your truck because you could see coolant running on the floor. You shouldnt do it to your air cooled engine even though you cant see escaping air. The result in both cases is loss of cooling capacity.

I think the main question was the rubber curtains that hang under openable and hinged front and rear covers. You may have earlier machine that never got these curtains. They raised hydralic tank off of floor and added some screened floor when they added curtains. The rubber curtains hang down against the floor and I believe they are mainly to keep a hot spark from catching chaff under engine on fire. The louver they are talking about on cooler would only be for directing air to aid in keeping compartment swept clean. We have removed alot of the rubber curtains but when we do it we clean up the mess of hoses and wires. Re remove hoses and reroute as necessary to get them tied off of floor. Blower fan also should be in far condition to have enough air moving. We also have little to no problem at all keeping air cooled machines clean for the season. A nice long neck on blower and a little care will keep engine compartment nice and clean. Take care.
