check the solenoid that he key switch sends power to first it will be inline before the solenoid on the starter

I'd just go ahead and pull starter to have drive end cleaned out. It is likely that the drive is sticky and won't slide out far enough easy enough to hook up the main power into starter windings. Make sure the drive will free wheel one direction while apart. Good luck

Thanks for posting the question Cam and thanks for the suggested remedies. Same thing happens on my R70 (and 10 times worse when restarting a warm engine)
