I can't remember the range but a few of the combines got out with the inlet and outlet hoses reversed. Barring that on some tanks where floaties of some fashion suck down over the outlet, I have used a length of thin mig weld wire inserted from the outlet tube into the tank a few inches and left there. The wire sticking through will prevent a piece of silicone from sucking in the hole. About the best you can do is go in through the fuel sending hole.
