Combines R70 Needs More Power

We pumped our 91 R70 up to 300hp as that is what the R72's with the Deutz were raised to. I noticed it just being underpowered the first year as well, and got alot of guff for being slow when it wasn't my fault. Do this and you'll notice a promising improvement.

My experience with a pair of R60s is to spend a few bucks on a diesel pump overhaul at a shop that knows how to repair that pump. The previous owner of one of mine butchered the governor trying to increase power; the other was just plain tired from age. If you go that route you might consider having the low speed idle set to approx half the factory idle speed so you can engage the separator without tearing belts apart. Tom in MN

For what it's worth - Seems I heard once that those Deutz V8's are detuned a lOT - to the tune of 200 hp or so. Capable of 500+ hp. BUT, it might be because of cooling issues being confined in that engine compartment so watch it! Best of luck- Tom langan

I would highly recomend have your pump done by that guy in KC, I can't remember his name right now. I know two guys that sent there to him and it solved alot of there problems. I want to say it was Midwest diesel but not sure...Somebody on this forum knows because this is where i got his name to start with..

I was on harvest crew the first year the 72's came out and we ran the Harvester Specials which are suppose to be turn up +_- 20 hp. Well that year they had problems when they turned them up and some got tweaked a little more than they were suppose to. I ran my machine for about 200 hours before they came out with the dino to test ours and my machine overheated the dino and still had power to give. They said the last reading on that machine was over 350hp and it had bearly pulled it down. I was very disappointed when I got back to the feild and they had took that much power away.

Try Diesel Injection Service in Regina, Sask. They recalibrated the govenor on our 1991 R60 and it sure improved our machine. Before calibration, the govenor was at about 15%. That means that the engine would have to drop 15% before the govenor would respond. The govenor is now at 7% and delivers more fuel when it responds, and the HP increased from 225 to over 250. We are much happier with the performance now. We are in northeast Sask, and if the rain would stay away, we could enjoy the improved perfomance.

They unscrew the eletric box that the seperator clutch is wired to on the main drive shaft and bolt a stub shaft on to it there. That is where they attach the dyno.
