When the connector or sender lays in straw and gets wet you eventially have a problem. If you strip the wire away from connection you may see the corrosion taking place ruining the electrical path. We usually find this when performing ohmmeter tests but I think it would be a good guess. Wiggling the connectors in behind fuze door or plug in at tattletale will also sometimes locate the poor connection. The wiggle test is done with machine running up to speed. Best to route wires so connectors never sit in straw especially if it could get wet. Good luck
