Combines rebuilding 1660

You should try to talk to PETERBIll on this forum. He knows all about fixing and rebuilding a combine that has had a lot of rocks through it. He told me that he can stand in the middle of his 2166 right now. That's going deep to fix it up!

When you get your rock trap also get the rock drum and set them properly. I have lots of rocks on one farm and if properly adjusted the rock drum will keep the 2 1_2 and larger rocks down on the platform. Adjust your feeder clutch to allow it to slip when rocks contact the rock drum. Keep a supply of feeder chain slats on hand as they sometimes bend. The rock trap is designed to keep those rocks under 2 1_2 inches out. If the paddles are adjusted right it will drive them down into the grain mat in the trap. Empty your trap several times a day. The only ones that still can get in is the little pebble sized ones of less than 1_2 inch and if you keep your concaves are adusted not too tight, they shouldn't cause you any problems. That is how I deal with rock infested fields.

I posted a few days ago about wearing a hole in the floor of my feeder house on the 1660. No one else has had this problemIJIJ this is at 2222hours.It is just up from the header and can see it easily from the front when header is removed. do i have to gut the whole feederhouse in order to put in a new floorIJ

This is very common for 1460's and 1660's. My 1460 had a new floor put in. At 2000 hours the former owner of my 1660 welded a 1_8 thick plate to the floor across the width of the feederhouse and extended it about 9 inches back. I bought it that way with the intention of replacing the floor. it has worked so well I now doubt i will bother changing it out. It also provides a bit more strength for stopping rocks at the rock drum.

When I got my 1640 the bottom of the feederhouse floor was all dinged up where a rock had gone through it. I just took all the bolts out removed the floor on the front part of the feeder house and had a local machine shop build me a new one. They rolled the front part and pressed the holes in. I've used it 4 years now this way and it still looks like brand new, and it was only 75% of the price of a new one from CIH.

Don't get discouraged, dieselade. I've rebuilt a 1660,1666 and now am on my 2166. I have all the experiences you spoken of.... broken and dented rotors, cages, beaters and beater pans, ect, ect. Right now Case offers a factory rock trap complete for about $1400. It will require some extra parts and pieces since the unit extends the drive parts forward about a foot... also requires a longer feeder drive belt. I've run my machine for many years without a rock trap, but this year I'm putting one back on. With the cost of machines now days you can afford to spend quite a bit on repairs. I avereage about $10,000 per year, sometimes more. You should be able to get the impeller spoke from a used equip dealer. To bad you are'nt close by 'cause I have 4 or 5 used rotors stacked out back. I'm in central Washington.
