Combines rebuilding a hugger

Spirals will make a HUGE difference. I ran mine way too long the first time. Now I replace them about every 4,000 acres. I don't think you would have much luck rebuilding them. I did a major rebuild on mine a couple of years ago that included new chains, new drive sprockets, new floor under the auger, new plates covering the gearbox...they were getting wore through. And, I think I should have just gone ahead and replaced the stripper plates while I was at it. We weld on them every year to build them up. Probably time to replace the snapping rolls, too You may need a few of the drive shafts that turn the gathering chains if the sprockets don't fit snug. I had 3 or 4 that were wore enough to replace. They wobbled a bit.

Spirals have one-way pins in them. Make sure to drive them out in the proper direction and then you might have to heat the spirals, but usually you can just beat them off.

Pound on the smaller end of the pin! You still may have to torch some of them. They don't come out very easy.

An air hammer works really well also. Get your safety glasses on and hold the air hammer on a flute of spiral and normally it will walk it right off. Rarely have to use heat. We have chromed some spirals and they are in the testing mode now to see how long they will last. So far they are holding their edge.
