We put a rebuilt compressor on a 2420 JD haybine 2 or three years ago. We took a cab off a junk 2420 and put it on ours. We did not replace the lines. We put the new freon in and it blows colder air than any piece of equipment we own. So ours has been problem free.

We had a similar problem on our 4840. It ran 15 years on the factory compressor until it finally went out. We bought a rebuilt Deere unit and had a local shop charge it with freon. Two months later it was in JD shop for some work and a Green lite and was told the shaft seal was leaking bad and should replace the compressor. When I told them the story they seemed to just pretend it wasn't leaking and didn't fix it. The tractor leaked freon a little each year until we traded it. Was never sure if they just were looking for things to fix on green lite or if it should have been warrantee. There was signs of oil at the seal soon after it was installed.

We have a 4230 and 4430. On the 4230 I converted the system to R134a and used the old compressor because I had to replace a line. On the 4430 I totally restored the tractor. I completly redid the a_c system except for the Evaporator asy. I used a rebuilt compressor from NAPA ( same place that rebuilds them for Deere). The compressor blew up and now i have to replace the evaporator asy. I have been told by dozens of people that you are better off getting a good used compressor from a salvage yard. A lot of the mid 70's GM vehicles used the same style. That is what I'm using on my 4430 now. The one I have is off of a 1973 Chevy suburban with dual air. Good luck and stay cool!
