I would reccomend a gleaner R62 or R72 with a corn soybean setup. I work on a custom harvest crew and know what I am talking about, but remember this is just a personal oppinion

The Axials are great machines in corn from what I've seen. But if you run any grains or soybeans, you can't go wrong with the Gleaners. Those longitudinal rotors like to twist straw up into ropes that cause all sorts of problems. Gleaners thresh a wide mat of crop material due to the transverse orientation of the rotor. The tines in the STS are there to treat the symptoms, not the cause of the twisting and roping. You'll appreciate the massive grain bins in the Gleaners too compared to your Axial Flow. We traded our R62 this winter for an R72. Our local dealer went broke(poor management) so we drove about everything-AGCO R72, Cat 465, CaseIH 2388, 9650STS. All have pros and cons. We liked the capacity of the Deere, AGCO and Cat. The platform on the JD is awesome. The Cat has a lot of capacity in corn but is an elevctronics nightmare. The Case is a nice machine but a little small if you run an 8 row head in 150+ bushel corn. The Case is almost as simple as the AGCO. All these machines were very good. If the Case had 50 more hp and a 300 bushel grain tank and a bigger shoe, they would have something. Case was maybe a tad bit more gentle on beans than the AGCO or JD. The 21 or 23 series is a huge apgrade from the 16 series, however we like the price, capacity and ease of service with the Gleaner. Get an R62 and you won't even remember what a 1660 or 1680 is. Also, hugger corn head is the best.

I farm 14,000 acres corn beans and wheat so i have 2 of every brand of combine i would stick with my red one for grain quality and ease of operation take the cat for speed and capacity or the NH if you want somthing that will have holes worn in it in 2 years or the gleaners if you want somthing that has tank capacity and a cummins like what is similar to a case or go with the cadillac of them all and that is the deere

I would go for the price difference, on whatever brand it may seem to be. Comparing them by the class size, all combines are good machines and the best one is the one what is set and run by the right person. For dependability there is nothing wrong with any machine if maintained properly, granted all brands do have lemons. I may be wrong but I think you could pick up an 8row case head for less then a Gleaner one. You wouldnt have to change your flex head wich is money you would save, getting rid of your 6 row wide would probably be easier trading it in on an 8 row narrow through case. Another thing to look at I dont know wether you keep a good parts inventory or not but there is lots of parts what will work on a 1680 from your 1660. Honestly you were probably very satisfied with your 1660 in the past the Axial Flow is a very good dependable, combine what has been working smooth for 22-23 yrs now. I have nothing against Gleaners but in your cituation it would be much easier to just swap your 1660 for an 80 keep your flex head and in time get the 8 row narrow...

Nick, Cutter has some very good points about trading to the other brand and having to switch heads. It always will cost more to switch colors if you are'nt planning on switching heads. With the corn head the hugger will be more but there is'nt a better head on the market. But I liked the comment from 270 the most. About the Cadillac. My brother-in-law is a mechanic at a local GM dealership and when you talk about a Cadillac he says they are the most overpriced worst built car that GM produces but it has that sticker on the hood that makes everyone want one. So I guess that if you want to spend more money but drive the Caddy that isnt any better then any of the others and impress everyone with the green and yellow your choice is simple. just my 2 cents John Ferguson

I was gonna post something very similar to that too. I was going to say that Caddys are big, heavy, and pretty to look at, and have lots of bells and whistles. But try to do any work with them and they are worthless! But you sure can impress the neighbors by driving one around, can't youIJ I can definately see the similarities!
