Combines red rooster lP kit

I have one on a 1480 with the 466 B engine. Is good for a guestimated 50 hp and a little better fuel economy. This is on an all mechanical fuel system, They have some great new units for electronic diesels where they claim a considerable economy increase.

does propane boost deisel powerIJ Because propane in a regular gas engine you lose hp . I had a neighbor years ago with a 806 lP that i used and the thing couldnt pull a 13ft disk . and I think you all know what a 806 deisel would pull. That thing was gutless my 2cents

I think the difference in a diesel versus a gas is that the lP is added in addition to the diesel fuel whereas a gas runs on lP only. When more fuel is burned in the combustion chamber than would otherwise be there then it produces more power.

Propane definitely increases power in a diesel engine. I haven't seen this used on a combine, but back in the 70's land-leverlers used lP all the time on their scraper tractors. Most had a button mounted on the steering wheel or shifter to activate the system and get a boost when needed. Had about the same effect as Nitrous Oxide in a drag racer. On a combine I don't know if you'd keep it on all the time, or just use it as needed.

The old mechanical red rooster system I have used on a 1480 for the last dozen years, feeds propane to the intake air pipe any time the throttle is open 1_2 or more. They have a venturi metering system that matches propane injection to air flow,so the engine will not overfuel as it lugs down. With it on,diesel rattle is gone, smoke is gone, oil stays clean a long time, the extra power allows me to run 1 mph faster. Coolant temp actually goes down inspite of the power increase.

Rotor Man: I'm still concidering adding the red rooster system to my combine....what is stopping me is finding a way to refill the combine mounted tank....we don't have a local lP dealer so I'd need storage and a pump system. any suggestionsIJ I don't want to buy the fancy expensive transfer pump. The Red Rooster kit is cheap concidering what everything else cost these days... Thanks ......Neil
