If what you are talking about is the rubber belting strips,my neighbor uses them and they seem to help.

I use them anytime the beans are short, helps a lot, also a lot cheaper than an air reel. Randy

Another more time consuming, but much better angle, is to reduce the diameter of the finger type pick-up reel to enable the lowest part of the reel to be brought right back over the knife. On the later model reels, the spider arms can be cut,over-lapped and welded so that the fingers miss the centre tube by less than an inch. New sheet steel end plates need to be made to run the cranks on the right diameter. The modified reel is only a couple of feet, front to back and can really get down to shift material off of the knife in very short crops. We are going to hang an air-manifold out in front to cut losses even more. Use on a flex-front usually means an expensive haircut on the fingers!

If these are the rubber belting why not use old baler beltingIJ I just installed a set on one of my heads in anticipation of short beans, seems it would be a lot cheaper.

Yes, I use reel sweeps and I wouldnt cut soys without them. Maybe the next head will have an air reel, but this one doesnt because I didnt know about them when I ordered the head. I did quite a bit of experimenting with sweep location and sweep length and will share that info if you decide to go ahead with them.

Tom I would be very interested in your position and length of sweeps. I put the hose mod. on last year and really liked it. I think the sweeps would be iceing on the cake. Also how did you attach sweeps to reelIJ Thanks in advance.......

Yes, I would like to know the length and location you came up with. Do you also have hose mod installed. Dealer also mentioned the tine paddles from hart-carter, but I don't see how they can get low enough to sweep bar clean. Thanks Dan

Cheaper still and durable without the weight.....the clear plastic stuff that they hang on coolers for forklifts to drive back and forth through. I had a guy give me a bunch of this stuff that was used and had become hard to see through. I put in on my 30ft platform with 1_4 bolts and acorn nuts. Works well. On an old header I used leg belting but it was much heavier, I don't think the plastic fingers could take that leverage and weightIJ JD
