I have never heard of anybody leaving the rotor in to do this.. You will at least have to move the rotor back away from the gearbox 8" inches or so..

you will want to have it all the way out to clean real good. look for cracks around the bolt holes this can be repaired with the heavy plate to reinforce the bolt pattern.
