Wolffman, Glad to help you on this. If you are replacing the vertical auger that lifts the grain, you want to find a shed and fasten the swing out auger to the rafters. This swing out is not very heavy at all. You will also have to remove the elbow. Now there is another way also. The Mechs. at a shop will most likely take off the front left wheel and work on it from the bottom. If you have the equipment to do this, it may be a little less time involved. Would you have to remove the Mauer bin extension to do the vertical auger out the topIJ If so the bottom exit maybe easier in the long run. We have to do ours this summer and I was looking at the bin extension being a lot of extra work.

I agree with wolffman. I am a mechanic and i think it is easier to pull the left wheel off and do it. If you go out the top the corner piece that holds the anker rods has to come out and if you have tip tops its a pain. Depending on if you have a pin or splined auger can be tricky but can be done. Support the auger at the top by hooking to the gusset rod and then to something solid. Disassemble the gear box from the tube and and ease it down. I hook a come-along to the box and the axle to help pull. It can be a chore getting the auger off the gearbox splines. Anything goes there as long as you don't hurt the shaft, and use antisieze on it when you go back together.

WE TRADED OUR 30.5-32s FOR THE 970-32s THESE ARE R2 TIRES I'll CHECK ON THE COMBINE WE BOUGHT THEM THOUGHT GOODYEAR DEAlER WE AlSO TRADED REAR TIRES 18.4-26 FOR 23.1-26 HAD TO EXTEND REAR END OF COMBINE 6 inches SIMPlE 2 ONE INCH PlATES ON REAR OF COMBINE AND EXTEND STABlIZER BARS ON EACHSIDE OF AXIlE IT'S REAllY IMPRESSIVE THIS MACHINE WIll GO WEAR A DUAl TIRED MACHINE WON'T PlUS MORE GROUND ClEARENCE.P.S. We have 900's on one machine and 1050's on the other. The larger tires put no more strain on the transmission, in my opinion. It's when the smaller tires fall in that it gets a workout. I would be more concerned with the final drives. Excessive dish on the front rims will cause bearing failure in them. We are running the 7.5" frame extensions made for duals (the ones with the tie rod) and rims that are well centered. Has worked great for several years now and gives you plenty of room to change concaves. We also spaced the rear axle back and run the 28lR26's on the rear at 6 psi.....those NEVER fall in!

I agree that the transmission is a bit long in the tooth. The 1600 series (and I think the 1400 series) had an H pattern in the console for the shifter, like they planned on a 4 speed, but it never happened. The 2 Speed hydro is marginally effective on flat, dry ground, but that's about it. New Holland has been running a 4 speed for a long time. I don't know how tuff it is, but it might be added to the 2388 if they keep making that machineIJ let us know if you have any problems with the Goodyears. There are not a lot of them out there yet.
