Hello onion farmer, how you doingIJI also buy these tractors and restore them,I currently have two 4840s,a 4880 and a 4900 that all look and run like new.The only problem with me is that after I restore them I like them so much I can't get rid of them, lol.Wish Massey would see the light and bring these old work horses back.

I know what you mean, the bad thing is when someone buys one and a year later its trashed. The last 4900 I did was repowerd with a 1150 cummins 525 hp before I got the tractor. It had 12000 hours on it running that much hp. I fixed it all up went though the transmission and front axle put chrome stack up the corner of the cab. Two years later and 2000 it is run in to the ground. The windows are gone grill and chrome stack gone and the motor is toast. He told me all he did was put fuel in it.

When i was pulling wrenches at the local massey_gleaner shop we had a customer who had 2 4900 and 1 5200. He had trouble with the brakes and had a little fire damage to the wires running the power shift on the 5200, he tried a 8425 agco star wile his was in the shop and really liked it. He traded his a 4900 for the star, but would not give up the 5200. Five years later he is still running his 5200 and two stars.

Hey guys we run a 8360 Agcostar which is based on the same machine as the older massesy's McConall or something like that. Only one thing I can say about this rig, What we were looking for was a brute horsepower machine, without all the toys like powershift tranny and such. The transmission is great as is the engine. We have 2000 hrs on it mostly pulling a landoll 7-30 weatherproofer II in the fall and a soil finisher in the spring. I absolutely love the tractor except for the air filteration for the cab. Its amazing the power this brute has and how comfortable it is to ride in. We have had alot of brands of 4wd's in the past (including deere's and 7580, 8550, 4w220, 4w305) The Agcostar is just a great tractor if you dont need all the toys and like a brute power source, if the masseys were anything comparable to this one I wish we would have started with the masseys instead of the other colors. Granted the allis machines are good but they really dont compare to the Agcostar in terms of comfortable ride and brutual power, but they are older machines too, so I cant knock them.

I farm with 2 brothers in south central minnesota and we have 4840 and 4880 in the 5 to 7000 hour area and we asked 2 dealers about going through front differentials and they both said that if the axles are not loose the bearings are good and dont touch it unless the axles wiggle in the housing because they have had bad experiences going into them unless the bearings are noticibly bad. Has anyone else had the same experiences with themIJ
