Combines rice eater or choker

We used a 9600 to cut all of our rice for about 5 years and had no problems at all. The only thing that ever plugged was the header. It can certainly handle rice. We have always used a spike tooth cylinder, and wouldn't try a rasp bar unless you were using a stripper header. We grow medium grain in California--Southern long grain may thresh more easily, so if you are down there, get some local advice on the cylinder type. Greg

If rice wasn't your main crop, I wouldn't even consider a spike tooth machine. A rasp bar cylinder will do just fine in rice. Your capacity limiting factor will be the straw walkers anyway. I don't think that a rasp bar machine would slug more often than a spike toothed model. You don't find many machines in the southern rice growing areas with spike toothed cylinders any more.
