The switch was made from a 4 bar beater to a 3 bar beater to inprove the capacity of the machine by allowing room for the crop to pass under the rock trap. The faster you spin the beater or the more bars that are on the beater makes it harder for crop to pass under it. It's called the wall of steel effect, this also occurs when you run a sickle knife too fast as well. The best thing is to put a 3 bar beater in and scrap the 4 bar beater. The 4 bar was used in early 1400 series and won't feed in tough conditions (forced to shut down early) and takes too much power. I think the slowest sprocket setup is a 40 tooth on the front and a 20 tooth on the rear. The fast setup is a 30 or 32 tooth on the rear. I run the 20 in all crops and conditions.
