Combines rotor balance after hyper mods

I would have mine balanced with or without mods if I could find someone to do it properly at a reasonable cost.

Had mine done thru my local dealer in Southern Ontario. They sent it to a shop in Windsor, I believe. Cost ~ 1200 $ Can.. Had lots o weight placed all over but really was worth it. Thought I had things fairly well balanced by weighing and matching individual bars before installation. Cost will vary by how much weight is needed and difficulty in placement. I think well worth the cost, esp. for high rpm threshing. Rob.

Our standard flat rate charge is $350 cdn on a hoffman digital bed machine at Sunnybrook. Freight is a big factor but a lot of Sask guys bring Mom for an overnight get away in Edmonton it seems.

We had our rotor balanced at Huisman Machine in Worthington, MN. He spins lots of big stuff, and as I recall, was very reasonable. Irv

I balanced mine after making the hyper modifications and it cost a grand total of $0. All I did was put both sides on a bearing. The discharge side is easy, all you need to do is make a braket for the bearing. For the drive side I borrowed a stub shaft that fit into splines (beleive it was a sun gear in a MFWD White tractor) band slid a bearing over it. Then put it on the some saw horses and spin it. Where it consistantly "bottoms out" I placed weights on the opposite end (the top). Make sure that the rotor is perfectly clean. When I put it in, it worked perfectly. However, once you run the machine I beleive that the rotor will eventually self balance by dust accumulating on it.

What you did was 'static' balance it. With that method you could put a pound @ 12 o'clock on the drive end and a pound @ 6 o'clock on the discharge end and it would balance. Still when you spun it, each end would vibrate and introduce bending and twisting forces on the rotor as a whole. What the guys are talking about is dynamic balancing where every part of the rotor is balanced by placing weights across from every place that is out of balance. Ed in Mantana

We've never did anything but static balance for over 20 years. Couldn't put up with time delay and expence to get spun tested in a special machine. We try add needed weight half way accross rotor when static balanceing. That way the weight could never be more than a half rotor from where the weight would be perfectly placed. We do have a special stub shaft with bearing made up to put on in place of coupling for balancing. Static balancing won't work on the old P1s if center tube is bent. So if you have a bent tube you need to straighten. If you never run any crops with high cylinder speed it will be less important. If you can't get rotor out to static balance or spin after changing you can rev hear up to max while watching RPM to see if you note a vibration starting at speed.(I believe Tbran once said to set MIl on roof for a measuring devise) A static balance in machine with gearbox in neutral will be very rough way to do it but could get you close. Gleaners dynamic test gets drive and discharge sides to within 7 ounces or something like that. You might want to check if your having it dynamic tested that they are measuring vibration on both ends of rotor. I think alot of shops don't measure at both bearing supports which could represent difference in prices. I would check with dealers within whatever driving distance you could do and see what they do. Don't anyone get me wrong I think a dynamic balance threw complete RPM range would be the best thing to do especially if machine is setup to measure vibration on both ends. Take care.

Thanks! That is close enough to get there and back in 1 day.

Thanks! Thats not a bad idea for anyone who wants to see the largest shopping mall in the world. But my other farm is almost within walking distance of the second largest shopping mall and we have never set foot in the place. I think we looked into shipping a cylinder there 5 or 6 years ago until we got into details from the local trucking outfit.
