I think you want something heavier in the rotor gear box. I've always used 80W90 gear lube and that is what the book recommends also.

The ops manual has always recommended HyTran and still does for the rotor gear box.

The two speed boxes in the 14 16 and 21 series used Hytran. The 3 speed boxes in the 23 series on use 80 - 90 gear oil.

If that is true why have my new combines always had gear lube in the rotor gear box.

The only gear box that has 90w oil on our combines is the gearbox to the right of the cab, but our newest machine is a 97 2188. Also, the gearbox at the bottom of the incline unloading auger.

The original question was on a 1688 rotor gearbox and it uses HyTran. Only the newer 3 speed gearboxes use 135 or 85w-140. The unloader gearcase and the feeder drive gearbox to the right of the cab also use the heavy grease.

Hytran, as said before only the one beside the cab has gear oil!
