Combines SCH ProDrive

I cannot comment on the SCH ProDrive but Ive run the SCH cutting system on my 1020 header for the last two years. The first several hundred acres I thought it was the greatest thing ever for the 1020 header. It cut a little lower than the OEM sickle and did a very nice job. But then the sickle sections started getting dull, they are not self sharpening like the CIH sections are, and I had to replace a lot of them that broke also. I also had to replace about a dozen sickle guards. In the two years I had to replace the SCH sickle head four times, and I had not replaced the OEM head a single time in the previous four years that I had that header and replaced only one or two OEM guards. Now I really liked the theory of the SCH cutting system but I found that it is just not built near as heavy as the CIH sickle and guards. As anyone else experienced the same thingIJ In the last few days Ive been reading over on the Deere page that those guys really like it, but I plan to go back to the OEM sickle for next fall.

Hmmm, dont know about the ProDrive but we have the sch sickle and never have had any problems. The sch sickle sections are hardened all the way through and not just the cutting edge like others are. I dont think we have broke even 4 sections on the sch since we have had it

When did CIH get "self sharpening" sectionsIJIJ What section did you use from SCHIJIJ Coarse, medium, fine. If you used a fine cut, yes, they will wear sooner. If you used the coarse cut, the should last alot longer. I have customers here in North Dakota using this system on 1020 and love it. Those guys are in rocks, too. Had one guy use his for 3000 acres in 03 and come back and done his acrage again in 04. Never broke a guard. On the knifeheads, there are a few tricks on those. Did you speed up your wobbleboxIJIJ The system has to run faster than the CIH system. Not saying that you didnt have issues, but there may be some solutions to them.

I am far from being an expert,but I think your wobble-box has some issues that are affecting the auger drive.Worn bearings,bushings etc.A rebuilt one should run much,much smoother.John Young,the guy that rebuilds 820's knows these things inside and out.He can give you expert advice that your dealer won't.The dealer just wants to sell you a new head.

CIH has had self sharpening sections ever since Ive been using them, at least 15 years. Ive seen very few dull CIH sections they will be worn narrow on the tip before they get dull. I used the coarse SCH section. No I did not speed up my wobble box; 500 RPM has always been fast enough in the past. As for the knife head, I realize that German steel may be tougher than U.S steel but the SCH head is about half the size of the CIH head and it doesnt take a rocket scientist figure out that it just isnt built heavy enough. Young's number is 1-888-IFIX-820 and he can tell you how to work on your wobble box over the phone. Also I am pretty sure he is using the ProDrive on his new Harvestmore 725 heads so he could give you an unbiased opinion on it.

We have been using the SCH cutting system on a 1020 head for 15 years and never had any of the problems you are talking about. We did speed up the wobble box, using the CIH box not the ProDrive so I can't speak for that. We are also using the same SCH head that we started with but on a new knife. My bottom line from our experience I never go back to CIH cutting system. I should add we only use it in soybeans. Rob
